Derby Grange Rezoning and Voluntary Annexation Vote

Council members voted, 6-1, to grant final approval of a request by Derby Grange LLC to rezone and annex into the city 50 acres of farmland near Kennedy and Derby Grange roads for residential use.

Council Member Luis Del Toro, who voted to approve a second reading of the rezoning request, voted against waiving rules to approve a third and final reading.

Del Toro said he was pleased by the developer’s efforts to appease concerns by neighbors opposed to the development, but he was concerned about the city’s ability to provide appropriate fire response to the area. The closest city fire station is about two miles away at 2180 Kennedy Road.

The station serves much of the city’s Ward 2, which Del Toro represents.

“By doing this, are we going to stretch our resources to the point where potentially a response that was within a mile or a mile and a half is now going to be delayed by 30 seconds to a minute because now the coverage area for the station is more than it was before? Del Toro asked.
